Topic: php53 vs php>=5.3 in EPEL packages

Hi Remi, maybe check out this bug report I just created - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=738105 - drupal7 in EPEL is requiring php53 rather than php >= 5.3 for EPEL5 - you may have an opinion on that...

Re: php53 vs php>=5.3 in EPEL packages

I'm really perplexed by this php53 stack in EPEL-5

The full PHP stack count more than 200 packages (145 pear, 25 pecl, ...)
And I'm the maintainer for > 100 packages.

I don't plan to go in the "review" hell for this... too big work.

And php53 create more dependency issues that it is usefull, I think.

I only consider this, as a "preview" (test) version to ensure application are compatible before upgrading to EL-6.

If some maintainers (such as drupal in the pointed link) switch their app to require php53, it will remove the choice of the php version used to the final user.

Definitively, I'm lost.

Laptop:  Fedora 38 + rpmfusion + remi (SCL only)
x86_64 builder: Fedora 39 + rpmfusion + remi-test
aarch64 builder: RHEL 9 with EPEL
Hosting Server: CentOS 8 Stream with EPEL, rpmfusion, remi

Re: php53 vs php>=5.3 in EPEL packages

You have a have lot of patience to be a Fedora maintainer...I commend you ;-)

I reopened and gave them a suggestion, but I don't know if it will work, and probably less chance they will like it...
